A few brave souls turned up on Sunday morning to mark out plots, shrugging off the worst weather seen on Baulk lane for many a month. Thanks to Tom for his expert co-ordination and to those eager helpers, just a few plots left to mark out on a sunnier day.

Hedge Planting

We had a fine day for planting the hedge along the Baulk Lane edge of the allotment field.
105 assorted trees were planted, with many large and small hands making light work. We improvised tree-guards from some chicken wire that we found discarded in Hood Brook. If you're passing by, have a quick look to see if any need a little attention. There are also some that are still uncovered, so bring a bottle (plastic and cut-down)!

Here is a list of current members and a history of subs paid. We will keep this updated, so let us know if you want any changes.

Potato Day - get chitting!

The HAG committee has decided that, like us, you must all be raring to get some action going on our field.  The field is ploughed, the right hand hedge has been trimmed, work has started on a bog garden and habitat piles and we want to move on and get some horticulture done.

After discussion we decided that we cannot wait indefinitely for the decision on the footpaths re-routing and came up with this plan:  we will hold two communal ‘come and dig’ days in the first half of April, followed by a mass potato planting at the end of April.  We have four triangular bits of field made by the criss-crossing footpaths so we can use these segments to plant in.  The first few segments will be potatoes which are a good way to start in a virgin field.  Later on another segment could be sunflowers (we and the birds can eat the seeds).  Or brassicas.  Or?

Dates:

• Sunday 1 April, 10 am – 2 pm. Digging
• Sunday 15 April, 10 am – 2 pm. Digging
• Sunday 29 April, 10 am – 2 pm. Planting

We ask that members supply potatoes of your choice which you have already chitted at home and come on 29 April armed with garden tools and picnics.

Please do not come in a vehicle.

So we have an idea of numbers/quantities to expect, could you let Jane Varley know if you are coming to dig and plant and about how many potatoes you will bring.  Also make a note of whether they are early, mid or late season croppers.

Allotment plan 2nd draft

A second draft of our allotment plan has been produced. The main changes are widening of footpaths and decreasing the number of plots to 40.

Hedge cutting success!

A big thankyou to all those who braved the weather and turned out to face the impenetrable blackthorn, armed only with loppers, secateurs and saws. We had over a dozen volunteers and managed to cut the hedge right back to expose the drainage ditch which we dug out and got the water flowing down into the brook.

Unfortunately, the rain eventually beat our efforts at a fire, so there's a lot of hedge cuttings left on the site - to be burnt when it's a bit drier. As some bright-spark commented - it looks like we've just moved the hedge by a few metres!

With such hard workers and a lack of tea/cake breaks (due to the rain), we had finished the job by 1pm. Apologies to anyone who turned up after that, expecting to help.

Hedgerow cutting, 11th December

The hedges of our future allotment field are in need of management and we are planning a day of cutting on 11th December (10am - 2pm). We are looking for volunteers to help, no experience necessary. Please bring loppers, secateurs, rakes or gloves if you have them. Tea and coffee will be provided, but if you can bring something tasty to share - then the day will be all the more jolly!

Jo Killingley has now drawn up a plan for our allotment site. This isn't the final version, but we expect this to be a fairly accurate representation.

General Meeting

The next HAG general meeting will be held on 24th November, 2010 at 19:30 in the Little John Inn, Hathersage.

The agenda is as follows:

1. Apologies
2. Update on progress with:
• lease
• footpaths
• landscape design
• funding / donations / subs
3. Poll of intended allotment holders and size of plot required (½ or ¼ standard plot size i.e. 120m² or 60m²); plot sharing
4. Outline of work to be done and call for volunteers
5. HAG blog - you know about this already!
6. AOB
7. Next meeting (AGM April)

Any member is entitled to appoint another person as a proxy to exercise all or any of the member’s rights to attend and to speak and vote at a general meeting of the Company using a form supplied by the company and it must be received at the Company Secretary’s postal or email address not less than 48 hours before the time for holding the meeting.

Our allotment site

After much research into sites all around the village and conducting a detailed feasibility study (please ask if you would like a copy), HAG has been offered lease of a site off Baulk Lane. HAG has been exploring ideas about the site with members and local residents, it is hoped that there will be a variety of different sized ‘plots’ and communal facilities available to individual residents or groups in Hathersage and Outseats.  HAG has raised money to pay a Community Landscape Architect to take all of these ideas and draw up a detailed plan of the proposed site.

We are currently waiting to sign the lease on the land which will allow us to get going with the site planning and preparation. Watch this space for more updates.
